Personalization

Making a message specific to its recipient. In 2026 the word covers two opposite things: merge-variable insertion (template personalization) and research-based writing (actual personalization).

The test is substitution: if the sentence works with any name swapped in, it isn't personalized — it's addressed. 'Loved your post' fails; 'your margin-teardown number on returns surprised me — asking because you'd know' passes. Real personalization requires reading the profile and recent activity before writing, which was economically impossible at volume until agents made reading cheap.
